Wax on, wax off

We live in a fast pace world and we expect ourselves to transition at the same speed. New job, personal changes, .. we want to be in the game right away, no waiting, no time in between phases. And when we see that it takes longer than expected to be up and running, or that the previous experience is of no use, … impatience, frustration.

Any process in life takes its own roadmap and pace, its own transition period or learning curve. From time to time we can find a shortcut, but, still, will have to do the walk. And while we take the ride it probably will not make any sense, seem surreal, unnecessary.

But, once you get there, you reach the projected goal, pieces will start to fit and almost without realizing it, Boom! You got it!

Us and our memories

How many things we have learned that seemed imposible, nonsense, useless, hard time more than anything else? School, home, family, friends, work, partners have been and are our learning’ playground.

The Who we are today is the result of adding experiences, trainings and decisions.

  • We went through a tough time, we had an incredible time
  • We meet amazing people
  • We succeed, we failed
  • We learned how to calculate objects volume, distances, … physics, maths, chemistry
  • We had an job we did not like, a boss we could not bear
  • We have learned what we like and we don’t
  • ….

Life is like a river and we can either watch the river flow or we can learn to swim diving into it. If you just look at the river flowing, you will have not learned anything, just letting everything go, repeating the same mistakes, unable to go further incapable to apply learnings as you only memorized them to pass the exam, to put a “check” on your day on that difficult moment. But, when you learn to swim, you are able to use what you have been through in order not to repeat mistakes, to be able to swim in other waters.

Memories will always be there, in a “that instant recall” or “deep inside of you”, how did that instant, that moment, transformed you.

Unfortunately we can not chose the things we want to happen to us, but we can learn, we have that ability. Will you just waste it? Will you be the sum of many things or just a sequence of happenings?

Mood and acts

The way we feel can be triggered by outside events. And that can impact the way we act. And the way we act always changes how we feel.

These days are perfect to reinforce the way we act in a positive way, ignoring the rainy day and how it makes us feel, and instead start learning something difficult for us, or facing tasks or projects we have been procrastinating for a long time. Not because we were told to do so, but because we want to upskill ourselves. It’s the perfect time to change our acts. To connect more generously, give away our time to someone else. Deep into the relationships we are digitally building.

The more in control we are of our acts the better we feel. Maybe not immediately but the feeling of going over a challenge or having helped other people to move to the next level will be there. We can not control outside events but we can control how we act, do we let ourselves go with the flow and let the environment be in charge? or do we take responsibility of our own time and mood so we act and shift the way we feel?

Teaching vs. doing

Kids are constantly learning new stuff. For example, to tie their shoelaces. We don’t always have the time or the patience to show them how to do it. Do we invest (teach)? or do we want inmediate results (do)?

  • We can teach them how to tie their shoelaces (wetrain them) or you can just tie them ourselves every time
  • We can train and then let them try over and over again, learning from experience or we can just do it and never allow them to learn during the process
  • We can educate them in research (while investigating how things work) or we can let them think that only we have the answer
  • We can show them that there is learning from failure or we can tell them that failure is not an option
  • We can enable them to understand the effort tha lies behind every success or we can leave them blind and think that everything in life is easy, that you only need to ask
  • We can help them to walk the road towards thinking by themselves or we can let them come to us every time that difficult questions appear
  • We can support them so they build their own opinion or we can just let them go with what we consider it’s the truth/right thing
  • We can obtain self-reliant/confident kids or we can have kids that will always ask us what to do next

Teaching takes time, requires dedication, patience, support. And, usually, results do not come inmediately, and when they do, they might need some corrections.

Doing has inmediate results, we do not need to correct anything. Simple and fast.

What kind of kids do you want to lead the future?

But is that what we want? Or do we prefer to develop our kids, our teams?

About projects, presentations and theater plays

When preparing for an opening you have no room for improvisation

Imagine that in four months there will be the opening of a new theater play.

The script is finished, now it’s only necessary to essay:

You, the scriptwriter, you, the actor. You perfectly know what is about, investigated and learned during the writing process. 4 months can allow you to get closer to perfection. There is still some room for improvisation.

You, the director. Every day during four months you are close to the scenario. You know what the results need to be and how do you want it to be played. Orders, instructions are given.

You, the producer. You know it has to be nicely played. You read the script and liked it, made it happen. It is not possible to be there, to see the evolution day by day.

Now, same scenario with a small change. The script is not finished, it’s written while the essays progress:

You, the scriptwriter, you, the actor. You are learning along the writing process. After the four months, there will also be some room for improvisation.

You, the director. New pages are given to you and you need to understand and adapt to the actors that are on the stage. You are almost learning at the same time your actors do.

You, the producer. The initial idea was attractive. Now, only trust and some visits to the theater can guarantee there will be good results.

Sometimes we see some improvisations on the stages, sometimes. This comes after a long learning path. It doesn’t matter what part you took on the preparation. Only if all participants learned or knew enough, only then, improvisation would improve the representation. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be natural, it could probably be a complete disaster.

Learning, knowledge, practice. Basics that in the end, allow people to sort some difficult situations, enjoy some unplanned time slots during presentations or to simply just prepared themselves at the very last minute. Hard work and preparation is what is behind what we sometimes think, was only some funny improvisation.
